MAFA Fund Raising Workshop
Just Announced!
Dottie Harrigan will lead a 3 project Home Décor workshop featuring spring designs inspired by her trip to Italy last April – the perfect way to use fresh flower embellishments in any room of the home or office.
Students will make
1.) A hand-tied bouquet in a custom cuff armature, which will add color, texture, and depth to any collection of flowers,
2.) A permanent wall art design with secret passages for fresh flowers to find their way in, and …
3.) An embellished keepsake vase using the combined techniques and materials from the first two projects.
You’ll want to create these pieces over and over again to bring a little Italian design to your own home. Or use them as prototypes for your clients and customers the next time you want to offer something interesting and unusual.
This workshop will be a great way to shake off the Valentine’s Day holiday and get ready for spring!
Proceeds from this special workshop ($105) will go to Mid-Atlantic Florists Association (summer convention)

MAFA BOARD MEETING MINUTES
The remaining Board and friends of MAFA met on January 21, 2012, 3PM at Bergeron’s Flowers & Events. Present were: Christi Lopez, Betty Whaley AIFD, Derrick Myers, Dean Shover, Jan, Michelle, Rennie Friedlander, Dottie Harrigan, and Terry Godfrey AIFD.
OLD BUSINESS
Christi read the last minutes that were recorded – from June 2010 – to refresh memories and bring the group up to date.
MEMBERSHIP
There are no current members, as dues were not collected in 2011. We do have the contacts from those who attended last year. Terry Godfrey will work on updating a contacts list for the organization.
TREASURER’S REPORT
There is $3,000 working capital in the checking account. Because a new corporation had to be established it was decided that a new checking account would be set up to align with the new ID number for the organization. Major fundraising has to be accomplished in order to produce this year’s convention.
NEW BUSINESS – General
Message from the President: Christi stated that she would do her best to produce an exciting 2012 convention but that since she had been “acting President” for three years she would no longer serve on the Board after the 2012 convention. And the organization is in danger of collapse because there are no designated board members. Volunteers need to step forward to fill interim Board positions immediately. And, volunteers need to step up to assume full term positions at the June Convention.
The following people agreed to assume Interim Officer positions through June 2012: Terry Godfrey – President Elect, Betty Whaley – Vice President, Dean Shover – Treasurer, Rennie Friedlander – Secretary. The following people will assume (or be asked to assume) interim Board positions through June 2012: Ellen Seagraves, Doug Vogel, Debbie Moultry, Derrick Myers, Michelle, Jan, David Shover. Everyone needs to be looking for people to assume the full term Officer and Board positions starting June 2012.
Dottie Harrigan will work with Christi to support the organization with administrational tasks including but not limited to posting all appropriate MAFA information on its current website: www.MyMAFA.com.
No revisions were made to the By-Laws.
NEW BUSINESS – Spring and Fall Workshops
Since workshops are an important part of gaining revenue for the organization multiple dates and venues were discussed for holding workshops. The first will take place at Flowerhandlers on their gathering weekend February 18/19. Details to be determined and announced asap.
Other people and businesses will be canvased and asked to host, sponsor, and/or teach MAFA workshops this spring prior to the convention. Fall workshops will be discussed later – probably post convention.
NEW BUSINESS – Convention
Most of the meeting time was spent discussing the upcoming summer convention. Christi gave an overview of her dreams and wishes for the convention – with the understanding that some of her plans might have to be trimmed.
Christi let the group know which sponsors and presenters had been confirmed. The group then brainstormed sponsors, presenters, and donors for the rest of the convention programs, workshops, and other activities.
No committee chairs were assigned.
No date was set for the next Board meeting.
